From improvisational roots, Sophie’s act is absurd and self deprecating covering her origins such as the superhero surname sweatman, hearing loss and a good old fashioned British dysfunctional privileged upbringing. She reminds audiences of a younger Margaret Rutherford as Miss Marple - with Surrey village roots but without the knitting - crossed with a passing nod to Alison Moyet (without the singing in tune).
Now living in Crouch End – if her road was the Shaun of the Dead’s equivalent to the Eastenders’ set she’d be living in the Slater’s house – where there are far too few troublesome people to inspire raging comedy passions, except fellow travellers on the 91 bus which she takes regularly to gigs and on which a loud iPod user once pointed out it was not a mobile library. At Christmas time character act Santa Letitia reappears. The saucy Yummy Mummy Christmas reminds you of your worst female boss. Think, perhaps, of a mixture of Ian Beale and David Brent in a proper woman’s body, not just the man tits.
As an MC, Sophie is at home in a hostess role presiding over proceedings to springboard new comedians with a comfortable gig, warming the audience up with natural quiptitude and sharp spontaneity with a warm and welcoming appeal and of course the non-existent acting background combined with amusing mishearings makes for the funny type of awkwardness.
Sophie’s act is original, uniquely clean and family friendly.
